Dawn Moss never had been in a more bizarre basketball game, particularly one where she was the main attraction.

Moss, a 5-7 senior at Richmond (Va.) Steward School, had all her team's points -- and two for the opponent -- in a 47-45 overtime victory against Tappahannock St. Margaret's.

"I'm glad we won. It made it more of a comical game," Moss said. Seconds into overtime, it wasn't so funny.

After winning the jump, Moss drove for a layup -- in the wrong basket. "I said a few choice words," she said.

Moss said game officials had her facing the wrong way on the jump. She thought so but didn't say anything. "I've been playing since I was 9, and I don't usually shoot at the wrong basket," she said with a laugh.

She bettered her school single-game record of 41 points. She had 43 in regulation for Steward (7-14) -- Including six in the final minute -- and six (Four for Steward) in overtime.

Moss, who averages 23 points and 10 rebounds, was 14 for 36 from the field and 19 for 30 on free throws. The rest of the team -- which starts a sophomore, two eight-graders and a sixth-grader -- was 0-for-16 from the field.

"I remember telling the girls I needed some help, that I couldn't score all the points alone," Moss said. "But they were shooting airballs."

Said Steward coach Janet Rice: "I told the girls to get the rebound and get the ball to Dawn and let her shoot..."

Moss ended her career Thursday with 30 points in a 43-39 playoff loss to Lynchburg Virginia Episcopal School. In two season at Steward, she scored more than 650 points.
